I just bought a Canon EOS Rebel T2i. It was highly recommended as a mid-entry DSLR from a variety of websites like CNET, and so far I'm really happy with it. Like you (probably), we had become frustrated with our point and shoot's inability to take photos of our daughter in low light, and also its shutter lag, which often prevented us from getting her in the frame period. Now with such a large aperature, and virtually no shutter lag, I can actually wait for the perfect moment, click, and I have the shot. While most DSLRs can probably do this, and I haven't compared it to another one, I'll trust the opinion of professional reviewers online that it does it better than most.
My brother has the 60D, which I really liked, but it's about twice as expensive for not that much improvement in features IMO. I bought the T2i online through Ryther camera.com for $520. I think Costco sells it for around $700 something.
